A man was killed in May 2014 after failing to hear a train approaching at a level crossing because his crash helmet ‘muffled’ the sound. 37-year-old Paul Martin, from Stroud, had been crossing a train track in Gloucestershire on his trail bike when an oncoming train hit him. A report drawn up by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) following his death found that the nearby signage did not explain that trail bike riders were prohibited from using the Frampton level crossing. Car drivers are being urged to see the person behind the helmet and take longer to look for motorcyclists in the latest THINK! motorcycle safety campaign. The £1.3 million campaign, timed to coincide with the anticipated Spring increase in motorcyclists’ return to the roads, encourages drivers to take longer to look for motorcyclists and think about the biker, not just the bike. Government cuts road safety spending

The government has cut spending on road safety campaigns from £19 million in 2008/09 to just £4 million in 2011/12 – a cut of nearly 80%. The figure was revealed after a freedom of information enquiry by road safety charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is calling for changes to British Summer Time (BST), to give us more daylight hours in the evening. According to the IAM, bringing the British time zone forward by an hour in both winter and summer would mean more light in the evenings, when crashes are more likely.
