New app allows cyclists to report potholes instantly

The Cyclists’ Touring Club (CTC) is due to receive £30,000 from Whitehall to improve their website, “Fill That Hole”, and develop a new app to enable cyclists to report potholes at the click of a button.  The new app will provide cyclists in Leeds with an easy way to report dangerous potholes on the roads, alerting the council of their need for repair. 

The new app is due to be available to more than twenty-six million iPhone users in February, replacing the old app that is only available to nine million users.  The launch of this improved app has been timed to fall in with the beginning of “pothole season”, when winter weather causes the greatest damage to roads.

75 pothole-reports per day

King Lane in Moortown was recently identified as being the road with the most potholes in the country, with Leeds City Council having already spent over half a million pounds to people that suffered injuries on the poorly maintained road.  It was revealed earlier this year that Leeds City Council has already paid out over £500,000 to personal injury claimants over the last four financial years.  The council received around 1,170 claims for compensation regarding poorly maintained roads in that window, with the council receiving around 75 pothole-reports per day.

Roads minister Robert Goodwill said that potholes are a serious danger to members of the public.  He continued: “That is why we want people to tell councils where to find them so they can fill them in. This app means more people are going to be able to report potholes more easily.”
